Water Shade® is a family-owned and operated business founded by Jeff and Monica Downey alongside Thomas Downey. The concept originated from a relatable experience. After returning home from a day on the water with significant sun exposure, the team began thinking differently about shade.

That question led to early prototypes built with shade sail cloth, wheelbarrow inner tubes, and a sewing machine. Over time, the concept evolved into a refined product, eventually earning U.S. Patent #8,770,213 B in 2014. The included tether allows users to secure the setup to an anchor point, helping keep the canopy in place. For added stability in breezy conditions, the optional Wind Anchoring System uses bags made of the same heavy duty material, attached to each float pod while in the water. These bags then capture up to 2 gallons of water, providing another 16 pounds of water weight per bag, helping to keep the canopy from flying away with unexpected breezes.
