Growing families, demanding work schedules, travel, and busy routines can make eating enough nutrient-rich vegetables every day a challenge. Even people with the best intentions often find that preparing fresh produce consistently isn’t always realistic. For others—including individuals recovering from bariatric surgery, those undergoing certain medical treatments, people with chronic nausea, or children who are selective eaters—consuming larger servings of vegetables may be even more difficult.

Urban Roots Farms was founded with a simple goal: make whole-food nutrition easier to access without asking people to completely change their lifestyles.

Built around the belief that “We couldn’t get every family to the farm, so we found a way to bring the farm to every family,” Urban Roots Farms combines modern farming practices with carefully preserved organic ingredients to create convenient, shelf-stable nutrition that fits into everyday life.

A Mission Rooted in Real Food

Urban Roots Farms was founded by Ryan Kealy and Dr. Robb Blackaby, two professionals whose very different careers led them to the same conclusion.

Ryan Kealy spent more than 25 years leading complex real estate development projects throughout Arizona. As a father and longtime youth sports coach, he saw firsthand how difficult it could be for even health-conscious families to maintain consistent nutrition amid busy schedules. Living in Arizona also reinforced another priority: growing food responsibly while respecting limited water resources.

Dr. Robb Blackaby approached the challenge from a clinical perspective. As a Doctor of Physical Therapy with more than two decades of experience working alongside Olympic and professional athletes, he recognized that everyday nutrition plays an important role in supporting long-term wellness and performance. Together, they envisioned a way to make nutrient-dense whole foods more practical for more people.

Why Microgreens?

Rather than focusing on isolated nutrients or highly processed ingredients, Urban Roots Farms centered its products around USDA Certified Organic microgreens.

These young plants are harvested between days 10 and 20 of growth, a stage where research has shown they can contain significantly higher concentrations of certain vitamins, minerals, and beneficial plant compounds compared to their mature counterparts. Instead of shipping fresh microgreens that require refrigeration and have a short shelf life, Urban Roots Farms grows and freeze-dries them at its Scottsdale, Arizona facility within hours of peak harvest.

The freeze-drying process helps preserve the nutritional profile of the microgreens while creating a product that remains shelf stable for more than two years without refrigeration.

The result is whole-food nutrition designed to travel easily—from home kitchens and office desks to school lunches, athletic events, and vacations.

Introducing TrueMyco

One of Urban Roots Farms’ featured products is TrueMyco, a whole-food blend built on the company’s TrueMicro foundation of seven organic freeze-dried microgreens.

TrueMyco combines those microgreens with three certified organic functional mushrooms sourced from Mycolove Farm in Longmont, Colorado:

  • Cordyceps
  • Lion’s Mane
  • Chaga

Each serving contains the equivalent of 1,000 mg of each mushroom’s raw ingredient, while the label fully discloses every ingredient and amount used. The formula contains no proprietary blends, synthetic fillers, or isolated ingredients.

According to Urban Roots Farms, one half-teaspoon serving provides the nutritional equivalent of approximately three servings of organic vegetables. The mild flavor is designed to mix easily into water, coffee, smoothies, or other beverages, making it simple to incorporate into a daily routine.

Transparency From Seed to Scoop

Urban Roots Farms places a strong emphasis on ingredient transparency.

The company grows and freeze-dries its organic microgreens at its own Scottsdale facility, while sourcing its certified organic functional mushrooms from Mycolove Farm. Rather than relying on proprietary blends that conceal ingredient amounts, every component is clearly listed on the product label.

The broader ownership team also reflects the company’s emphasis on expertise. Clinical co-formulator Dr. Dan Rubin, ND, FABNO, helped develop the formulations alongside the founders, while Ken Crenshaw, Director of Sports Medicine and Performance for the Arizona Diamondbacks, contributed sports performance insight. Business leader Mark Schouten brings decades of operational and entrepreneurial experience to the organization.

Together, the team aims to create products built around whole-food ingredients and transparent manufacturing practices.

Bringing the Farm to More Families

Urban Roots Farms continues to focus on its founding mission: making nutrient-dense whole foods more convenient for everyday life.

Whether serving busy parents looking for an easier nutrition routine, student athletes balancing school and competition, or individuals seeking a small serving of whole-food nutrition they can comfortably incorporate into their day, the company believes simplicity matters.

Its philosophy remains straightforward: grow organic ingredients, harvest them at the right time, preserve them carefully, and let the food speak for itself.

For people searching for a practical way to add more whole-food nutrition to their daily routine, Urban Roots Farms offers an approach centered on transparency, convenience, and thoughtfully grown ingredients—bringing the farm a little closer to home, one small scoop at a time.
