Why Oral Health Starts with Biofilm

Most people think of brushing as a way to freshen their mouth, but oral health begins with something much more important: biofilm. Dental plaque is a structured bacterial biofilm that forms on teeth and along the gumline, and its accumulation is closely linked to gum disease, bleeding gums, tooth decay, and poor oral hygiene overall.

Research has also increasingly connected chronic oral health problems with broader systemic conditions, including cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders. Effective plaque removal is therefore not just cosmetic — it is foundational to overall health.

The Technology and Team Behind ENAMÜR

ENAMÜR was developed and commercially launched by Protegera, Inc., founded by Dr. Mohamed E. Labib and CEO Carmine J. Durham.

Dr. Labib, who holds a PhD in physical chemistry from McGill University, has worked with organizations including NASA and General Electric in materials science and biotechnology.

The core technology behind ENAMÜR originated from extensive biomedical research conducted by Dr. Labib and his research team at NovaFlux, Inc., a company that has built its reputation at the intersection of biofilm science, biomaterials, and advanced materials science.  At the center of the technology platform is microfibrillated cellulose (MFC), a plant-derived fiber sourced from Nordic spruce and processed without chemicals. This preserves the natural fiber structure and creates unique physical properties not found in conventional synthetic toothpaste systems.

Under Carmine Durham’s operational leadership as CEO, Protegera has navigated the significant challenge of taking a novel, research-intensive technology discovered by NovaFlux, and building it into a commercially viable consumer brand. The contributions of both teams, combining deep science with entrepreneurial drive and business experience, were integral to that effort — successfully taking an innovative concept from the laboratory bench to a fully developed and commercialized product. 

From Medical Technology to Novel Toothpaste

The MFC technology was initially developed to improve the cleaning of reusable medical endoscopes, which contain microscopic channels where biofilm can accumulate.

Dr. Labib and his team found that hydrated cellulose fibers could mechanically help lift and dislodge biofilm through fluid movement and physical interaction rather than aggressive chemical action. This discovery led to a new question: could the same principles improve plaque removal during brushing?

ENAMÜR became the affirmative answer to that question.

How ENAMÜR Works

Unlike traditional toothpaste formulas that quickly collapse into a watery slurry, ENAMÜR’s MFC fiber network maintains structure and consistency throughout brushing. The hydrated fiber matrix helps the toothpaste stay in productive contact with teeth and gums for the full recommended brushing time.

During brushing, the soft cellulose fibers work dynamically with the toothbrush to physically engage and lift plaque and biofilm from tooth surfaces and along the gumline.

Importantly, this mechanism is mechanical rather than abrasive. The fibers themselves are soft and hydrated, meaning the cleaning action comes from physical interaction with biofilm — not aggressive grinding against enamel.

Low Abrasivity, Effective Cleaning

One of ENAMÜR’s key distinctions is its low abrasivity profile. Many whitening toothpastes rely on high abrasive loads that may contribute to long-term enamel wear.

Supported by Peer-Reviewed Research

ENAMÜR’s technology platform is supported by peer-reviewed research.

A 2023 study published in the Dentistry Journal evaluated plaque removal performance in adults comparing ENAMÜR to a leading conventional toothpaste. Under the study conditions, participants using ENAMÜR demonstrated up to seven times greater plaque removal.

A second study published in the Journal of Dentistry in 2024 found that ENAMÜR delivered stain-removal performance comparable to three leading whitening toothpastes while remaining significantly less abrasive to enamel surfaces.

Together, the studies position ENAMÜR as more than a cosmetic oral care product — but as a functional toothpaste designed around the mechanics of plaque and stain removal and enamel preservation.

Cleaner Ingredients Without Sacrificing Performance

ENAMÜR is formulated without several ingredients many consumers increasingly seek to avoid, including:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
