The name Land O Lakes has Native American origins, with Native American inhabitants having settled here during the Second Seminole War in the 1830s. By the 1840s, a stage-coach line ran through the town. Land O Lakes was connected to the railway network in the early 1900s. The town expanded rapidly throughout the 20th century, absorbing surrounding communities such as Gowers Corner, Denham, and Ehran. As of the 2020 US census, Land O Lakes was home to a population of 35,939.

Dupree Gardens is a private botanical garden and leading tourist attraction in Land O Lakes. The 25-acre garden was one of the state’s first roadside attractions, having been opened to the public on December 1, 1940. Known locally as the “Blossom Center of Florida,” the tropical gardens have been renowned for generations for their winding paths, streams, and waterfalls. Dupree Gardens ranked as one of Florida’s most popular tourist attractions throughout the 1940s and ’50s. In 2003, a restoration project was launched by David Laurence and Amanda Slaz, owners of a section of the gardens, with the aim of restoring Dupree Garden’s original streams, ponds, and waterfalls.

Also situated within easy reach of Lake Bambi is the Plantation Palms Golf Club, a championship course that was designed by David Harman. With four sets of tees, the course presents challenges for all levels of golfer, with water on 15 holes. In addition to its 18-hole golf course, the venue also comprises an 18-hole mini-golf course, a lit driving range, and a full-service restaurant.
