The new year has only just begun, and everyone’s favorite city, which never sleeps, has countless free activities and events lined up for residents’ enjoyment. As the 21st century reaches its first quarter, New York City (NYC) continues offering excitingly accessible and affordable festivities for all to partake in.

January’s first week isn’t quite over yet, and the presence of tourists is finally beginning to dwindle. Whether you’re an NYC native or a reallocated resident who’s well-adjusted, there are several reasons to leave your lodging for some complimentary entertainment this month.

  1. Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library Workshops

At the Andrew Heiskell Braille and Talking Book Library, residents can register to participate in several online and in-person events throughout January. One specific activity worth considering is the Winter Tactile Craft Series: COLLAGE & MIXED MEDIA with Stina. This event is a set of workshops curated for individuals who are blind or partially sighted to explore collage and assemblage strategies through various tangible materials and verbal directions.

Participants will join artist and educator Stina Puotinen in developing mixed media and collage pieces by working with textiles, textured papers, and other textured materials. All are welcome, regardless of experience level, on Tuesdays from 5 PM to 6:45 PM, starting January 14th and finishing February 18th, 2025.

  1. Beauty Bar Stand-Up Shows

For comedy lovers, head to 14th Street, where the beloved Beauty Bar persists, with free stand-up shows every Sunday at 8 PM. Conveniently located near Union Square, the Beauty Bar hosts Secret Sauce Comedy, where NYC’s best comedians encourage and share laughs with audience members. With no fee or drink minimum necessary, visitors can gather with friends for an evening of amusement and entertainment.

  1. Bronx Zoo on Wednesdays

If NYC residents have an open Wednesday, the Bronx Zoo is a well-regarded landmark with free admission on the celebrated hump day of each week. As tourists exit the city during winter’s peak, the Bronx Zoo becomes an attractive spot for residents, as it’s far less crowded. The park offers free admission on Wednesdays to those who reserve a timed ticket beforehand.

  1. Earth’s Timekeepers Talk

On January 8th at 7 PM, NYC residents can visit the American Museum of Natural History to learn about Earth’s Timekeepers. The museum is hosting Lucien Nana Yobo, a Texas A&M professor of isotope geometry, in a discussion of past oceanic and atmospheric conditions as they impact the future of climate change. This talk is just a portion of the museum’s SciCafe series, and NYC citizens can stop by for free on the upcoming Wednesday.

  1. Frisbee Club With Strangers and Friends

Residents familiar with the quad may have had their fair share of ultimate frisbee fun with friends. On Thursdays from 5 PM to 6:30 PM and Saturdays from 3 PM to 5 PM, the Juniper Valley Tennis Courts in Middle Village arranges meetings for the ultimate Frisbee club. Players of all skill levels can sign up for a spot and join the frisbee-throwing festivities as soon as January 9th, 2025.

  1. NYC Parks for Exercise

One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions nationwide is increased exercise. In NYC, residents can expect every gym and fitness center to be packed with members all month. Instead of paying for a gym membership to work out in a crowded athletic club, consider getting fit at one of the parks throughout the city.

NYC boasts a park system that allows residents to locate the perfect place to get a great workout every day throughout January. NYC even offers free fitness events all month, making it easy for residents to select the activities that best align with their tight January schedules.

  1. Wikipedia’s 24th Birthday Celebration

Believe it or not, Wikipedia turns 24 years old this year! On Saturday, January 25th, from noon to 5 PM, the Brooklyn Library’s Central Branch at Grand Army Plaza hosts a birthday celebration for the beloved informational website. Residents can visit the plaza for interactive workshops and informative conversations.

The first 100 people to attend the library will also receive tickets for a free afterparty at The Armory with an open bar from 6 PM to 9 PM.
