This research, drawing on data from various government bodies including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Census Bureau, FBI, and more, ranked all 50 states and Washington, D.C. based on crucial safety metrics like pedestrian fatalities, DUI arrests, seatbelt usage, and the proportion of uninsured drivers.
New York stood out in the rankings due to its strong across-the-board performance. While it didn’t top any single category, its consistent high scores in every area led to the best overall average. Highlights include New York’s notably low speeding incidents, its position as having the second-fewest overall traffic deaths, and ranking third lowest in deadly accidents involving drunk drivers. In all other evaluated areas, New York notably exceeded the national average, cementing its reputation as the state with the safest drivers.
Following closely behind New York, New Jersey secured the second-place spot in the rankings. Like its neighbor, the Garden State exhibited strong performance across the board, tying with New York for the third-lowest rate of drunk driving fatalities and claiming the fourth-lowest rate of fatal crashes caused by speeding. This impressive showing demonstrates the commitment of both states to promoting safe driving practices and reducing the number of accidents on their roads.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, New Mexico emerged as the state with the worst drivers overall. The Land of Enchantment struggled in nearly every major category evaluated in the report. It had the second-highest rate of speed-related fatalities, indicating a significant problem with drivers exceeding safe speed limits. Additionally, New Mexico ranked third-highest in both the rate of drunk-driving fatalities and the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed in accidents. Furthermore, the state had the second-highest percentage of uninsured drivers, which can lead to complications and financial burdens for those involved in accidents with uninsured motorists.
The findings of this study highlight the importance of state-level initiatives and policies aimed at promoting safe driving practices and reducing accidents.
